Look Up

When life gets you down and your spirit criesLookUp

And you feel despondent and tend to sigh

Look up to see miracles around you

You won’t be sorry, they are readily on view

A sunrise heralds the dawn with a greeting

Welcoming all as it begins heating

The earth and her inhabitants all anewPurpleDew

The flowers and buds just covered in dew

The animals rise out of burrows and dens

People scurry off to their office pens

Buses, trains and ferries all do

Join in the rush of life’s auto cueOfficePens

In their scurrying and hurrying to and fro

They miss unfolding beauty, crying ‘Lo’

See the splendour of the crimson clouds

Lining the skies and sea all around

Feel the caress of refreshing breezeAvenue

Against the canvas of parks and trees

See its playful dart along avenues

And down boulevards in colourful hues

Tipping hats, tugging at skirts

Teasing the hair in a playful mirth

The birds all join in a chorus of trills

That hail the dawn in respectful drillsSinging-bird

Each with unique song and sound

In robust homage that abound

And echoes in harmonious pitch

To declare ‘Be thankful,’ you are rich

To hear, to see, to smell, to feel

All nature’s wonders upon a reel

That’s around to enjoy and embraceNatureMineJPG

Be mindful, you of the human race.

For sight and sound, a touch that’s gentle

Such gifts are priceless, not for rental

See all that you can with eyes anew

Before they are taken away from you

Be grateful, treat them like gold or treasure

Begin the day with joy that erupts

The best way to begin is to look up.

If only we could all sit back and appreciate our good fortune more – your poem really captures the need to appreciate what we have Wendy.

  5. Thank you Michael! You’re another poet (like Marissa, above) that I look up to, so I doubly value any compliment I receive from you. You have to put your work up in print … others need to see them and appreciate them.
